Murakami, St Martin’s Lane
Murakami is a beautifully designed Japanese restaurant and sushi bar situated on St Martin’s Lane. The restaurant serves dishes from the Robata Grill alongside classic cocktails with a Japanese twist and a selection of Japanese whiskies.
We were invited to the bloggers dinner at newly opened Murakami in the West End. I love all things Japanese, particularly the food, so I was excited to head down with my friend Tim to enjoy a selection of their best selling dishes. The restaurant is beautiful inside; its contemporary Eastern interior design is subtle and impeccable and despite being rather busy, the atmosphere was befittingly tranquil. Both the sushi and ragata bar were in eye line which made for impressive viewing and they wasted no time in sending over the food. We were paraded with a never ending selection of meats and fresh sushi plates – the shishito pepper and chilli beef kushiyaki off the Robatayaki menu was really really tasty as were the jalepino sushi rolls. Other dishes included: apple and soya sauce scallops kushiyaki and wasabi; rainbow of salmon, tuna, smoked eel; and teriyaki and lime chicken wings kushiyaki. Absolutely delicious! Murakami also offers an impressive cocktail menu created alongside Brixton’s Shrub & Shutter. Classics such as the Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini are given a Japanese twist and accompanied by some pleasing puns. I started off with the Don’t be Sake (champagne and… sake!) and the Murakamikaze (a zombie) went down well with pretty much everyone at the dinner.
We thought we’d stick with the theme and both chose the sesame seed cheesecake for dessert, but, although tasty, regretted it big time when everyone else’s nutella cheesecakes came out.
Murakami is reasonably priced for the standard of food and interior and I would highly recommend booking if you enjoy authentic Japanese food and eating at swanky restaurants.
