Split Red Dal, Chicken with Fenugreek leaves, Chapati and Paneer in Tomato Sauce Recipes

Curry curry curry. If you would have asked me a year ago what my favourite food was, I would have said pizza. I know what you’re thinking – everyone else used to think it to. And although I still love the humble crispy tomato and cheesy feast, curry has since fast taken over the top spot. I live in a predominantly Indian area of London and because of this, the high street is rich with Indian supermarkets, fashion stores and cutlery shops. Rather than take our usual Sunday trip to Waitrose last weekend, we decided to head to Ealing Road and indluge in some Indian cooking. I bought the India Cook Book when it came out and it has been sitting on the shelf for quite a while so I decided it was time to put it to use. There are 1000 recipes in the book but we whittled it down to 4. We chose Tamatar Chaaman (Paneer in Thick Tomato Sauce), Methi Murg (Chicken with Fenugreek Leaves), Masoor Dal (Split Red Dal) and Chapaati. …

Beer battered Squid and Baby Octopus

When we were wandering around Leederville in Perth, we stumbled upon a fantastic fishmonger called Kailis Bros. We stepped inside and saw a wide variety of fish on sale that had been caught that day. We bought a few Red Snapper to BBQ but the Squid and Baby Octopus caught my eye. We got enough for a starter for everyone and it was very cheap. When we got back to the flat, we set to deep frying it. Serve with Mayonaise and a wedge of Lemon and you have a easy and tasty starter. Ingredients 75g self-raising flour 100ml beer (we used Little Creatures Pale Ale) Squid and Octopus to serve 5 people for starter Salt and pepper Sunflower oil (for deep frying) Method 1. Heat the sunflower oil in a large pan 2. Sift the flour and a pinch of salt into a large bowl and whisk in the lager to make the batter. The consistency should be like very thick double cream 3. Season with salt and thickly coat Squid and Octopus with …

Little Creatures, Fremantle

Cast your mind back 12 or so years and the Little Creatures site in Fremantle, Perth was the shell of an old boat yard, previously used as a Crocodile farm. Now, you will find a bustling restaurant/bar come brewery housed in this warehouse ‘shell’ with fantastic home brewed beers and ciders, great food and most importantly a fantastic atmosphere. The brewery is firmly on show, complete with a viewing gallery to next door where you can watch the state of the art machines in motion. I first went to Little Creatures last year and fell in love with the place. So this year, we couldn’t go without another visit – a trip to Perth isn’t complete without an evening at Little Creatures. Situated in Fremantle, an old shipping town of Perth and possibly the largest suburb, Little Creatures is perfect for all ages – although anyone under 18 has to be accompanied by an adult. Make sure you take your ID with you too as if you’re not with an adult, things can get tricky …

Vinoteca, Marylebone

A few weeks ago I was invited to check out the build of the new Vinoteca in Marylebone. The aim of the visit was for Vinoteca to show us their new bag in box wine concept. Now, while they know that this is by no means a new concept, they want to prove to us that you can get really good quality wine in the boxes. We were able to try all of the wines and they were all very good. My favourite was the White. They are sold by the bottle and are priced at around (I say around because I can’t remember the exact prices) £17 for a bottle at the table, £7 to take away and £6.50 for a refill. So when my dad asked me where I wanted to go for my Birthday/Christmas dinner, naturally I chose the new Vinoteca. They don’t take bookings so it is advisable to arrive relatively early. We arrived at 6.30pm and were shown straight to a table, which I think was the only free one. …

Coach and Horses, Farringdon

A friend of mine was recently pronounced head chef of The Coach and Horses. Having never tasted his food before as he used to work outside of London, a big group of us decided to go down one Thursday evening and try it out. His name? Harry McKenzie. Remember that one. I have read some great reviews and fellow blogger Neil Davey (The Lambshank Redemption) hails it as his favourite pub in London. I can see why. The menu is not for the faint hearted (or the veggie). However, knowing that 2 of our group are vegan, Harry concocted an extra special 3 course meal consisting of Wild Herbs and Sea Vegetable Tempura to start, Celeriac, Candied Beetroot and Squash Lasagne with foraged Mushroom Risotto, Wild Chervil and Cobnuts for main and Chocolate Mousse, Apple Sorbet and Herb Crisps for pudding! The Coach and Horses homemade Scotch Egg has been the talk of the town for a while so I decided to order it as my starter. It is on the bar menu but I …
