Innovation and Imagination with Rootdown

Where Rootdown, East London What New restaurant and bar Rootdown shares its innovative and imaginative menu with East London. Experience A few weeks ago I celebrated my day of birth by renting out a bar my friend had preached about relentlessly since moving to East London. I arrived at Rootdown early doors in order to greet my guests and sneaked a peak at the food menu – I was so impressed that I came back to try it with my old friend (and new house mate) Rachael. Rootdown may be one of many new restaurants popping up on Lower Clapton Road, but their seasonal menu and unpretentious style ensures it outshines their rivals. Rootdown takes food very seriously. Becca Scales said “Our ingredients are seasonal, locally sourced and largely organic”. Head Chef Ben Lourjane is a champion of vegetables. Their vegetarian dishes are always a hearty and competitive alternative to the meat options. I knew from my birthday party that Rootdown did a cracking cocktail, but my attentions were drawn to the chilli pear caprioska. …

ShareEast Supper Club at East Village

What ShareEast Supper Club I remember watching the Olympic Park develop from my neighbouring home in East London. I was lucky enough to bag tickets to the event too. After all the excitement of the games, London was left to wonder what lay in store. After years of post-games development, the space has been transformed into 67 acres of breathtaking park land with a newly developed community on the doorstep. East Village going one step further to inject a community feel by launching a unique scheme, aptly named ShareEast, which encourages neighbours to participate in a monthly supper club – ‘Come Dine With Me’ style. The host for the evening will have the chance to show off their culinary skills while ShareEast covers the cost of the ingredients. All guests …

Sunday Upmarket Ethiopian lunch

I wish that the UK had a better street food offering. I have heard rumours of great street food in countries such as Brazil and Canada and even though I haven’t been lucky enough to visit those places, I truly believe that their offering is better than ours. How many times have you succumb to the dirty ‘illegal’ hot dog smell that wafts your way after leaving a club at 2am? Similarly, how many times have you had no choice but to purchase a dodgy cardboard burger when at an event? One of the most ridiculous I’ve ever seen is a burger van in the B&Q car park at the weekends. What?!? Surely there could be something tastier to cater for these DIYers food needs? The best street food I have experienced has been the Mexican trucks that frequent the pavements in New York. I was in my element when, after a few cans of ‘Pabst Blue Ribbon’ at Union Pool in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I was able to drift out to the terrace and purchase …
