Paul A Young, Soho

It is no secret that Soho is my favourite area of London. Over the last few years, the vibrant suburb has seen fantastic restaurant after restaurant and cafe after cafe open their doors to welcome very grateful customers. I am fascinated with the history of Soho – from a vibrant jazz scene in the 1940’s followed by the rock scene in the 60’s to becoming home to London’s gay scene and let’s face it, a lot of unsavoury bedrooms (look up at night and you’ll see the redness that I’m talking about), Soho is culturally diverse and never seems to sleep. It’s an area that I love and one that I’d live, work and play in for the rest of my life if I could. One thing that seemed to be lacking, until recently, were good chocolate and cake shops. Although they look mouth watering, the cakes at Princi don’t really cut it for me. And the cakes at Hummingbird Bakery do not exactly float my boat. But from today, my worries need be no …

London Coffee Festival

It seems it wasn’t just me that got totally and utterly confused by the location of the London Coffee Festival over the weekend. I was sent an email by La Cimbali, one of the main sponsors and the email mentioned that the stand would be in Hyde Park. What I didn’t realise was that this meant the Hyde Park ‘Zone’ in the Truman Brewery, East London. It was a bloomin good job that I phoned to ask which entrance of Hyde Park I should use before I got on the tube, otherwise I wouldn’t have been going at all! I’m sure the lady on the other end of the phone had a right giggle when she got off the phone to me. Then I found out that a few of my fellow Tweeters had had the same confusion. The website didn’t exactly make it much better! Confusion aside, we arrived on Saturday morning for the brunch session. I felt a bit cheated as we were greeted to an empty stage – despite seeing a whole …

Maltby Street Market

Ok – so I have a new favourite place. I came across the Bermondsey arches on Maltby Street a few weeks ago and then found out that some food traders that either produce or store their goods in the arches hold stalls every Saturday from 9-2pm. A new food market is born. Some are hailing it as the ‘new Borough Market’, although the two really aren’t terribly alike. For starters, each trader sells their products directly out of their arch so as we walked down Druid Street to the St John bakery, it didn’t look like there was a lot of action going on. It’s only when you reach Booth’s the greengrocers that you realise you’ve hit the market. You’ll probably see a few customers ambling about, armed with their baskets full of fruit and veg, some of which you won’t find at a local supermarket. I missed out on purchasing anything here as I knew that I’d be out all day so I didn’t want to be carrying too much around with me. However, …

Graze your way through the day

I must say that I am amazed and thrilled to have found a perfect way to Graze (or snack as I like to call it) whilst at work. All you office workers out there will probably agree with me that snacking is a great way to alleviate some of the boredom that almost certainly comes with being within the same square meter for 7-8 hours of the day. At my current workplace, I am responsible for buying ‘sustenance’, in other words office supplies. This includes chocolate and biscuits, which are a must for clients and perfect for when it gets to THAT time of day. Hunger strikes and believe me, it really does. So I was extremely happy when my boyfriend passed me a little voucher, not much larger than the size of a stamp stating that i could get my first Graze box for £1. I had no idea what a Graze box was but I was intrigued and visited the website. I was impressed by what I saw… Their ethos is healthy snacking …
