24K Magic at TRAMP

There’s just something about community that makes me go all gooey inside. We don’t have enough of it in the world these days. I remember sitting in my grandparent’s house as a kid lapping up their stories of street parties and deep friendships with neighbours. I can’t deny we live in different times now, but there is a large part of me that craves it. And it is probably this reason I prefer team sports to solo sports and why I am rather fond of going out to a venue and knowing I’ll bump into a friendly face when I get there. You might be wondering where I’m going with this, but bear with me reader. You see, you’d think the only places that have even a whiff of community these days are members’ clubs. But I don’t necessarily agree with that. I am a member of a club (which I absolutely love and is amazing in so many ways), but does it have a real community? I haven’t really found one yet, despite going …

Slobbering at Bukowski, Soho

What Meaty goodness at Bukowski, Soho Where 10 D’Arblay St London W1F 8DS Experience Friday night in Soho and pubs and bars are overflowing with creative types who are at the beginning of a huge session to let off steam from the heavy week of work that they have just endured. I arrive at Picadilly Circus and meander up through the narrow Soho streets, past me favourite Georgian townhouse buildings and arrive at Bukowski, the third outpost from the charcoal grill specialists. My late friend is late again, so I browse the menu before he arrives and ask the friendly South African waiter for a glass of wine. I ask him which is better, the Cuvee des Galets (syrah/Grenache/carignan), or the Black Ink (sweigelt/st laurent) and his response got us off to a great start. “Are you old enough to be drinking wine?” he smirked. I wasn’t sure whether he was joking or not, but presumed not as I have been ID’d more in the last year than I ever have in my life. “I’m …

The Burger Shack at The Wood House

What Hidden in the far corner of the vast, not-so-secret, garden of The Wood House pub on Sydenham Hill, lies the latest addition to the Young’s Family, The Burger Shack. Experience Gourmet burgers could not be more popular right now. The Burger Shack  is up to the challenge of rivalling your favourite. Visitors in the beautifully refurbished pub can opt to dine from the menu inside, but those who crave something quick and meaty can order straight from The Burger Shack outside. The garden hosts heated huts, family friendly giant games and, if you get the right night, even live music. I settled in the ‘Robin’ hut fit for six (all huts are named after woodland birds) and enjoyed the final few hours of evening summer heat. The garden was already busy with people who had the same idea. The menu for the shack is simple. I went for ‘The Streaky’ burger, presumably named after the deliciously salty Dingley Dell streaky maple bacon which propped up the top bun. I squeezed down on the medium …

Big Fernand Finally Crosses the Channel

Where Big Fernand, London What Big Fernand has ventured to London to set up their burger workshop, focusing on French flavours and Parisian finesse. There are no hamburgers here, it is hamburgés that Big Fernand deals in. It marries the comforting American classic with French gastronomy to deliver the crème de la crème. Experience In 2013 I went to Paris with Food for Think’s very own Sarah Kemp. During our three day trip, our feasting would have given Marie Antoinette a run for her money; but one restaurant in particular remained prominent in our minds. Just before catching our Eurostar home, we embarked on an adventure to Big Fernand, a French-inspired (obviously) hamburgé bar with a queue of hungry Parisians spilling out of the door. We agreed we had possibly just eaten the best burger of our lives and calculated schemes to bring this unique idea across the Channel. Luckily we didn’t have to as the team at Big Fernand were already planning their next venture. I could not be more excited to try a …

Five Guys, Covent Garden

Us Brits love a queue. It’s just as well, as every good no bookings cheap eat restaurant seems to have one. I am not a massive fan, though. I would rather not spend an hour of my life salivating and unable to concentrate on anything else other than getting inside and sliding my order in quick, sharp. Whenever I see a queue, I’ll recoil and either visit another day, or go back outside of peak hours. I visited Five Guys a couple of weeks ago. I had seen the queue many times as I walked past but never plucked up the courage to join it. But I did and was prepared to let misery take control. I was pleasantly surprised, however, when after just five minutes, we were in. What I didn’t realise was there there is a huge seating area downstairs and it’s not exactly the kind of place you will sit and lounge around for hours, so I imagine the turnover is quite high. The concept is simple – choose your burger (hamburger, …
