Pass the decaf (and don’t judge)

I wasn’t expecting what happened after my statement. His raucous laughter filled up the room and sent a shock wave through my whole body. A minute later, after he had calmed down, the following statement left his mouth – “Yea, that’s what all junkies say”. Junkie? Me? JUNKIE??? Oh god, oh god, oh god. I think he might be right. I was about to head on my first long run of my shiny new marathon training plan. Usually I have a coffee pre run and take gels that also contain caffeine. But wait – a few days previously I had given up coffee – hopefully for good. You might be wondering why I have given up coffee in the first place. I didn’t start drinking it until my mid-20s. But a trip to the land of unctuous crema and creamy strong flat whites changed that. From the moment first sipped on a cup of light brown heaven, I was hooked. Even sitting here now, I am imagining the satisfaction I get from the smell of …

Brixton Beach

What Brixton Beach Summer Pop-Up Where Brixton Beach Rooftop Pope’s Road, Brixton London, SW9 8JH Experience Brixton Beach is back, and just in time for the heat wave! In the words of our favourite Wham boys ‘all that’s missing in the sea, but don’t worry you can suntan’! Or sit in the shaded huts, whatever. On a roof in the heart of Brixton Market, Brixton Beach hosts some cracking food stalls. Among them are my favourite New Yorkers from Del74 serving up tacos and margaritas to liven up your beach trip. Del74 has a permanent restaurant on my road in Clapton which I rave about SO much I was given two ‘vouchers’ from my pals for my birthday (but shhh…it’s my little secret!) I arrived before my friend, but took the opportunity to begin my wander around the rooftop. It was a feast for the eyes and ears. The DJ was playing Cuban beats, the sun was shining and the cocktail list was tropical. I ordered two beers from the bar, grabbed my friend from the …

Table for one? A Solo Diner in Melbourne

He’s back, I thought to myself as I saw Omar being seated at the kitchen bar. The last time I saw him, he was about to embark on a five week work/fun trip around Asia. Little did he know that during his time away, a series of solo dinners were taking place and a blog series idea was bubbling away, all inspired by him. When I told my friend who worked at the restaurant before my time that I was inspired by a guy that comes in on his own most weeks, he knew exactly who I was talking about. Our conversation reinforced the fact that I had developed a soft spot for Omar’s style. And I wanted in. Most of the friends I have made since arriving in Melbourne work in hospitality, which means that evening rendezvous are usually out. It was only when I started working full time in PR that I was able to hold the knife and fork to eat with again, rather than to polish, and rather than wait around …

Christmas Collection Hamper from Hampergifts

I know what you’re thinking. But let me tell you that when it comes to Christmas, you can never be too organised. In fact, when I was passing my local butcher at the weekend, I popped in to ask them how much notice we need to give for our all important piece of festive meat. I had my first taste of Christmas a couple of weeks ago when I was treated to a Hampergifts Christmas Hamper delivery. The hamper was almost too heavy to carry when it arrived and I had to ask the lovely delivery man  to carry it all the way across the office to my desk. When he left, I unwrapped everything and it felt like Christmas had come early. I popped open the lid of the beautiful large wicker hamper and rummaged my way through the Christmas coloured stuffing to uncover the contents. I received the Christmas Collection Hamper, which doesn’t just contain two bottles of red wine, a bottle of white and a bottle of Prosecco, but a whole range …
