Kitchen Parties – Rack & Ruin Review

As the sun set over London last night, Lucy and I approached a large Victorian corner building with black painted windows. We were to spend the evening at Kitchen Parties, an immersive dining, drinking and entertainment concept. We entered into The Fourth Wall, the cocktail bar area, and sipped on a delicious lychee cocktail while we waited to be called to the table. The restaurant we chose to dine at was Rack & Ruin and we were to enjoy a ‘hearty three course banquet of delicious medieval style preserves and meats cooked on an open grill’. When we eventually made it into the dining room, we were seated at a long banqueting table and told to visit ‘Peter’ with our wooden board (plate) so that he could carve us some meat. We could see the large open grill in front of us, which was adorned with huge chunks of barbecued meat, cooking away right in front of our eyes. Our visit to Peter was surreal. A shady character, Peter pulled pieces of meat from the …

Gluten Free Snacking – Metcalfe’s skinny topcorn

Last summer I went gluten free for three months. I took an intolerance test from YorkTest and it came back with my worst nightmare – I shouldn’t consume too much dairy, almonds or egg white and I should cut out gluten completely. To be honest I never thought I’d last three months but I did. And despite my reservations it wasn’t that hard. I crumpled towards the end of last year when I went on holiday to Barcelona but from today I will be going gluten free again. One snack that I don’t have to say goodbye to is popcorn. I was sent a bag of the newest flavour from Metcalfe’s skinny topcorn a couple of weeks ago and I think I have found my new favourite flavour – Sweet Cinnamon Spice. I love it because it satisfies my sweet tooth and the bonus is that it comes in at only 117 calories. Metcalfe’s skinny topcorn Sweet Cinnamon Spice is exclusively available at Waitrose.

Mini gluten free lemon and polenta cakes

Judging by my Instagram and Facebook feeds, it looks like most of London has been out playing in the snow this weekend. Not me. I opted to observe the snowfall through the kitchen window whilst writing, planning furnishings for the flat, baking, cooking and looking for a few designs for a design project. I ended up using peach clipart and lemon clipart, which I thought were pretty cool. I also loved every minute of watching the winter wonderland that is the back garden. I found this recipe online but tweaked it slightly as I didn’t have enough ingredients to make a whole batch. I also added more lemon rind and juice because I love my cakes lemony. The bonus of this recipe is that it is also suitable for people with an intolerance to gluten. Mini lemon and pistachio cakes Serves 9 Ingredients Cake 100g ground almonds 50g desiccated coconut 125g course ground polenta 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 115g unsalted butter 65g golden caster sugar 2 large eggs Rind of two lemons Juice of …
