Skylodge, London Fields

I love December. It’s almost Christmas and this time of year tends to get really fun with loads of events to keep the festive spirits high. Since I moved to Hackney, there have been a few interesting restaurant and pop ups. Skylodge is the newest one, situated at The Hothouse in London Fields. Skylodge offers winter warming cocktails and delicious food and is presented by Platterform. As I walked up the stairs, I wasn’t expecting such an incredible venue – an expansive lodge like structure overlooking the treetops of London Fields. We were sat at a heated booth and enjoyed a range of amazing small plates (Lumbersnacks as they are known at Skylodge), including Wolf Waffles with Mamma’s Pulled Pork, Mountain Cheese & Wild Mushroom Brioche and the signature Skylodge Sloppy Joes. We also thoroughly enjoyed ‘Hands-On-Gretel’ hot spiced cider and a few red wines. For those wanting a bit of winter fun over the next couple of months, head to Skylodge and you won’t be disappointed. A three course set dinner option plus welcome …

L’Eto, King’s Road

Jet lag is horrible. But I have come to learn that the only way to deal with it is to plough through. I may have taken it a little too far last weekend though when I decided to cycle all the way to Chelsea for brunch. It was an interesting journey there for sure but my return was much better. I cycled through Green Park and all the way along the embankment past a fair few iconic London landmarks. I do love London. I was in Chelsea to visit L’Eto for lunch with my friend. We arrived at 1pm and were seated in the basement, which was packed full. We enjoyed a fresh juice before we ordered our food and I really liked that they offered a choice of a range of fruit and vegetables. For starter I had the crab and avocado salad with soy and lime dressing and seared sesame tuna with vegetables and oyster mushrooms for main. My friend had the same starter and plumped for the honey walnut butternut squash ravioli …

Staying Healthy in the Big Smoke

It can be tough to stay healthy when you live and work in a busy city like London. I know only too well how hard it is to stick with good, nutritious meals instead of grabbing a quick bite from a fast food place or takeaway point. I’ve been on a real health kick this year and have been trying my best to avoid pigging out just because it’s quicker than cooking. There are loads of ways to save time and maintain a balanced diet, so I thought I’d share a few of my favourites with you. If you need to make quick meals at home, you should definitely invest in a microwave. I know a lot of people believe that microwave food is automatically unhealthy, but it really doesn’t have to be. I cook myself a big batch of something delicious at the weekend (lean mince chilli, or vegetable-packed Bolognese), then freeze it into smaller portions to heat up through the week. A good tip is to freeze your food into larger, shallow dishes …

Inn the Park

The joys of living in London. There is literally always somewhere new to visit. Despite living only a twenty minute walk from St James’s Park in my first year of university I never visited. And despite having worked no more than a ten minute walk from the park for over a year, I still never visited. Until last weekend. I have heard may good things about Inn the Park, which is a cafe / restaurant from Oliver Peyton of Peyton and Byrne fame. You might also know him off the tele – his face has graced our screens on Great British Menu for a while now. We visited last Saturday at 2.45pm, which was the last lunch sitting of the day. It was a beautiful crisp (very cold!) day in London and the warmth that greeted us as we walked through the door was very welcome indeed. We were seated and provided with the lunch menu. Almost immediately I knew what I wanted to order. Jack and I pretty much always share so that we …

Ottolenghi, Islington

I have already done one post on Ottolenghi but I was very hungover that time and I figure I should just do it again. Ottolenghi is a vegetarian or cake lovers heaven. It is also one the best places to go for brunch and lunch in London – in my opinion anyway! The word vegetarian has been tarred with the wrong brush over the years. People expect vegetarians to live on a diet of Linda McCartney sausages, carrot sticks and celery. Ok, maybe that is a bit far but Yotam Ottolenghi has shown us over the last few years just how exciting the humble vegetable can be. If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting his restaurant in Islington (or the three take away cafes branches in Notting Hill, Belgravia or Kensington), you may have been lucky enough to see one of his two cookbooks. The first, Ottolenghi: The Cookbook was written by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi and took influence from their home towns of West and East Jerusalem. But their culinary repertoire does …
