Experience

I somehow haven’t managed to make it down to Made of Dough in Pop Brixton, despite hearing great things about their pizza (winners of the 2015 London Pizza Festival, no less!), so I was pretty excited to head down to the opening of their six-week residency at Market Yard Kitchen. If anything was going to convince me to drag my sorry ass all the way from Hackney Wick to Shepherd’s Bush, then the promise of home made Neapolitan pizza and cocktails would more than do it. And we were not disappointed. Market Yard Kitchen have set up a dreamily lit and cosily heated outdoor space that is just perfect for these early spring nights when you want to eat outside because it’s actually light when you leave work but still, tediously, absolutely bloody freezing.

The menu is short but effective, with five pizzas combining the thick yet blisteringly crisp Neapolitan style base with a Southern Spanish influence for the toppings. I had the Serrano – which was cherry tomatoes, serrano ham, fior di latte, wild rocket and stracciatella, whilst Joe had the Chorizo – which was brindisa chorizo, piquillo peppers, san marzano tomato, fior di latte, basil and extra virgin olive oil. They were, dare I say it, almost as good as the pizzas at Franco Manca. They also serve a classic Margherita, Artichoke and Rosemary and a Truffle with Portabello Mushroom which all looked equally mouth watering. Where they excel, however, is with the selection of homemade dips and sides provided to help with finishing off the delicious crust. The romesco dip, a Spanish red pepper and nut sauce was just the right amount of spice to offset my creamy pizza, whilst the olive and anchovy tapenade went with just about everything. To top things off, we washed it all down with several Staibano Spritz and some tropical pink Amalfi Negronis. It was a pretty perfect evening!

If you can’t make it over to Market Yard Kitchen this month then you can still catch them at Pop Brixton until they move to a yet to be disclosed permanent South London location later this summer!
