Clockjack Oven, Soho

I bloomin love chicken. A couple of years ago I never thought I’d say this, but, I might even go so far as saying that chicken is my favourite meat and over the last year or so, I have trawled London to eat lots of the stuff. Last week my friend Kim and I visited Clockjack Oven in Soho to feast on chicken. And lots of it. The restaurant’s website states that customers will have ‘The best tasting and most succulent, lovingly prepared rotisserie experience.’ and I have to say, I think I agree. We wanted to try a few bits so shared 4 pieces of chicken, chicken bites, the Clockjack Oven chicken burger, plus a portion of chips and a tomato, red onion and basil salad. The waiter arrived and filled our table with dishes. There was a lot to eat. But we did it. And we enjoyed it all with a range of Clockjack Oven homemade sauces – ranch, chilli and barbeque. I had a chicken burger last Friday at Rotary, a pop …

Central & Co, Soho

Tell me your favourite hangover cure. Mine? A good quality, well cooked piece of meat, plus everything else my friend and I tucked into yesterday at Central & Co, a new all-day Brasserie and Bar in the heart of the West End. After cycling into Soho from Hackney Wick, we parked up the bikes and headed for our table, which looked straight out onto one of the world’s most famous shopping streets, Carnaby Street. We ordered some olives and a bread board to start, along with an Aperol Spritz to quench our thirst and perused the menu, which was separated into ‘Brunch’, ‘Small Plates’, ‘Large Plates’ and ‘Sides’. We opted for the Flank Steak main with chips, watercress and roasted tomato but decided to share a Duck Egg Scotch Egg, Slaw and Seasonal Greens as well. After munching on a load of delicious bread, the food arrived at the same time and filled our table. Lucy winced as she saw how much there was in front of us but then quickly followed with a smile. …

Fika, Brick Lane

‘I feel like I’m on holiday’, said Lucy whilst sipping on her Life Aquatic cocktail, which consisted of dill vodka, elderflower and bitters topped with lemonade. Meanwhile, I was tackling my Inventory cocktail head on. A squeeze of vanilla vodka here, a dash of chilli caramel liquor there and a splash of Cognac, not to forget adding a bit of bubblegum candyfloss for good measure. It did feel like we were on holiday. Sadly, we were only sat on the quaint roof terrace on Brick Lane. We were at Fika, a Swedish haven nestled on one of London’s most famous streets, Brick Lane, next to bagel shops and curry houses galore. I had been to Fika before but a long while ago ande it was in the winter months so the terrace wasn’t an option. We unraveled the place mat menu and picked a few dishes to share – Lucy plumped for the Tomato Kingdom (heirloom tomatoe carpaccio, pickled wild mushroom and popcorn) and Campfire Steak. I went Swedish and ordered the Gravadlax followed by …

Whyte and Brown, Kingly Court

“How did you get into this industry?”, asked Fiona Gale, Creative Director at Whyte & Brown. My reply wasn’t exactly thrilling. I don’t have a romantic story of a childhood spent in the kitchen with my mum and grandma who passed recipes onto me. No. In fact, I don’t think I ever made anything other than currant buns as a child. So what happened? It all started about five years ago when I was at home and in need of something to satisfy my sweet tooth. I baked a tray of brownies and as soon as the first crumb hit my mouth I was hooked. That’s when the love affair really started and since then I have spent the majority of my time both searching for the best food the world can offer and attempting to recreate it in my kitchen at home. So that’s my story. Fiona’s? Well hers is certainly more romantic. Her mother was a fantastic cook and she spent a lot of time in the kitchen with her as a child …

Hackney Advisory

A few months ago I told you about my friend’s cafe, the Hackney Bureau on Mare Street. Well now it’s time to tell you about her newest venture, Hackney Advisory, also on Mare Street next door to the infamous Dolphin pub. Hackney Advisory is a burger restaurant at heart but also serves dishes such as incredible (and rather spicy) chicken wings, their own version of the classic Canadian poutine and a few other tempting dishes. They are also open for brunch and serve a range of classic brunch options, including poached eggs and avocado on toast, pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup and peanut butter and jelly toasted muffin. I visited not one but three times within the space of a few days and I opted for the cheeseburger twice and a portion of poutine the other time. The burger is served just how I like it – medium rare on a brioche bun with a perfect amount of salad and fries. I had never tried poutine before but I’m already thinking about making it …
