London Restaurant Festival – Chinatown Tour

Where Chinatown London What This month, Chinatown London hosted a special guided food trail for the first time ever as part of the London Restaurant Festival 2014. Six different restaurants in the area were selected especially for the tour route, allowing visitors to sample a wide range of delicious Asian cuisines in the space of an afternoon. The restaurants that took place were C&R Cafe Restaurant, Rasa Sayang, Maotai Kitchen, Baiwei, Plum Valley and Far East Cafe. The experience Yesterday was a good day. Why? Because I got to try 6 Chinatown restaurants. Greedy, I know. I was on a tour of Chinatown, the newest addition to the London Restaurant Festival, now in its sixth year. The last time I went to Chinatown was around 8 years ago when I was a student. I was lured in by one of the cheap buffets and after rolling out, belly bloated and gasping for any form of liquid I could get my hands on, I vowed not to visit Chinatown for dinner again. I don’t think I’m …

Commune at Goodhood – Brett Redman of Elliot’s Partners with Goodhood

Where Commune at Goodhood, Shoreditch What Commune at Goodhood is a partnership between Brett Redman (Elliot’s Cafe, Borough Market) and Goodhood co-founders Jo Sindle and Kyle Stewart. It’s located on the lower floor of the 3,000 square Goodhood store in Shoreditch, a plaec both men and women can find the best of a globally curated selection of womenswear, menswear, accessories, kidswear, beauty & grooming products and homeware. The experience Shoreditch has featured heavily in my London life. Nine years ago I was frequenting the Vice pub and slumming it in 333. In those days, the only clothing store I was aware of was American Apparel on Curtain Road. This was back when Redchurch Street was nothing but graffiti and the odd passer by. Shoreditch has changed a lot in that time, definitely for the better, and it’s not surprising that it has become one of London’s best shopping districts, full of independent boutiques, restaurants and cafes. I was invited to lunch at Commune at Goodhood this week, a partnership that intrigued me. I had a …

An Interview with Sian Quinn – Headmasters

1) What is your earliest hair memory? My earliest hair memory was playing with hair mascaras and braiding. Being the only girl in the family with three brothers, my mum always played around with different styles on my hair so I learnt how to braid really early and it’s still one of my favorite things to do. 2) How old were you when you decided to become a hairdresser? I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser from my early teens. Going to the salon was the biggest treat and watching the stylists create glamour in a 45 minute appointment amazed me. 3) How did you start in the profession? My career started at 16. I started studying at 6th form but I was desperate to leave and get into the salon and any spare time I had I’d research session stylists. I was following the work of Zoe Irwin who was working at Headmasters at the time and was really inspired. I joined the Headmasters apprenticeship program, which allowed me to work and learn …

Dining in with Deliveroo

Imagine you are sat at your desk, stomach murmering, your inbox filling up rapidly. You don’t have time to nip out and the work canteen food is certainly not appealing. What to do? Well, you could work straight through lunch and risk treating your poor colleagues to a snappy temper tantrum, or you could order one of your favourite restuarant meals to your desk. That’s what I did a couple of weeks ago and spent one desk time lunch tucking into a Brindisa feast. Deliveroo has partnered with a range of leading independent chain restaurants across London and is currently revolutionising the London dining scene. With restaurants such as Busaba Eathai, Carluccio’s, Cay Tre, Princi and Tommi’s Burgers (to name a few) on the books, hungry foodies can order their favourite dishes to their door in as little as 30 minutes. Orders of restaurant-quality food for home delivery can be placed at Deliveroo.

Chicken, Steak and Art at Hixter Bankside

Where Hixter, Bankside What The newest restaurant from Mark Hix. The concept is simple – chicken or steak to share. Mighty-marbled Himalayan salt dry-aged steak from hand-selected cows and barn-reared chicken from Swainson House Farm in Lancashire. Starters and puddings change with the seasons. Mark’s Bar, the latest outpost of Mark Hix’s award-winning cocktail bar is located in the basement, serving cocktails that champion British drinks’ producers. The experience A few years ago I worked on the PR team for Hix, so I know the concept of the restaurants well. Since I was on the scene, Mark’s portfolio has increased to include Tramshed, HIX Mayfair, Hixter City and now Hixter Bankside. The food concept is pared back and simple dishes, cooked well with excellent quality ingredients. What sets Marks restaurants out from other steak and chicken restaurants is the stylish surroundings. It’s no secret that Mark is friends with the art crowd, and as a result, beautiful and let’s just say interesting artwork adorns the walls. My favourite was in the loos. As I was leaving …
