Brixton Beach

What Brixton Beach Summer Pop-Up Where Brixton Beach Rooftop Pope’s Road, Brixton London, SW9 8JH Experience Brixton Beach is back, and just in time for the heat wave! In the words of our favourite Wham boys ‘all that’s missing in the sea, but don’t worry you can suntan’! Or sit in the shaded huts, whatever. On a roof in the heart of Brixton Market, Brixton Beach hosts some cracking food stalls. Among them are my favourite New Yorkers from Del74 serving up tacos and margaritas to liven up your beach trip. Del74 has a permanent restaurant on my road in Clapton which I rave about SO much I was given two ‘vouchers’ from my pals for my birthday (but shhh…it’s my little secret!) I arrived before my friend, but took the opportunity to begin my wander around the rooftop. It was a feast for the eyes and ears. The DJ was playing Cuban beats, the sun was shining and the cocktail list was tropical. I ordered two beers from the bar, grabbed my friend from the …

The Burger Shack at The Wood House

What Hidden in the far corner of the vast, not-so-secret, garden of The Wood House pub on Sydenham Hill, lies the latest addition to the Young’s Family, The Burger Shack. Experience Gourmet burgers could not be more popular right now. The Burger Shack  is up to the challenge of rivalling your favourite. Visitors in the beautifully refurbished pub can opt to dine from the menu inside, but those who crave something quick and meaty can order straight from The Burger Shack outside. The garden hosts heated huts, family friendly giant games and, if you get the right night, even live music. I settled in the ‘Robin’ hut fit for six (all huts are named after woodland birds) and enjoyed the final few hours of evening summer heat. The garden was already busy with people who had the same idea. The menu for the shack is simple. I went for ‘The Streaky’ burger, presumably named after the deliciously salty Dingley Dell streaky maple bacon which propped up the top bun. I squeezed down on the medium …

Jubo at Bedroom Bar, Shoreditch

What is it with the current obsession with chicken? Oh yea, maybe it’s the fact that, cooked well and with a bit of imagination, it’s utterly DELICIOUS!? I threw in imagination here because last week I was invited to try Jubo, a brand new Korean restaurant at Bedroom Bar in Shoreditch. Opening in September, Jubo will feature a Korean menu with a difference. Jubo takes inspiration from K-Town in New York and the street foods of Seoul, South Korea and the team has developed a sharing menu with dishes including chicken wings and strips (boneless thighs), steamed buns, subs and pickles. We tried most of the menu last week and were impressed with the honey & soy chicken wings and the pickles. The steamed buns and steak bulgogi sub needed way more filling (we ended up scraping the steak bulgogi filling out) but I’m sure with various feedback those changes will be made before opening. We also enjoyed a taster of Korean Hite beer, a good thirst quencher to match the chicken. JUBO will open …

Pizza Pilgrims, Soho – Opens Tomorrow!

Last night I descended on Soho for the opening of the first restaurant by Pizza Pilgrims. Soho has been crying out for this for a while – long have we had the cool burger restaurants but I have been waiting a long time for the down to earth pizzeria serving proper pizzas. I was reminded yesterday after I sent my Tweet declaring that this is the first excellent pizza restaurant to open in Soho that I was wrong. Princi has long been one of my favourite places to grab a slice of incredible pizza (and more recently a whole round pizza due to the opening of the restaurant next door) but I don’t place Pizza Pilgrims and Princi in the same basket. So what do I like about Pizza Pilgrims? Well the first clue is in the name but I also like the fact that they serve Negronis, Aperol Spritzers, Italian wines on tap and I also love that they have table football in the basement area. Diners will be able to enjoy a range of …
